After being ‘CrossFit curious’ for a while I finally reached out to the team at CrossFit Smash and honestly have never looked back. I remember so many people going out of their way to introduce themselves at my first session. Now I get to pay that forward and welcome new members as they join too.

The post natal support and advice from the coaching team was so incredibly helpful when I first joined in 2017, as well as the tailored advice and programming when I returned from major surgery in 2019. Even after a lifetime of playing sport and being active I’m by far the strongest and fittest I’ve ever been thanks to my time at Smash.

The amazing crew at Smash are now some of my closest friends. The level of support and encouragement is second to none. Such an awesome environment to be part of!

I started at Smash in late 2017. I wasn’t a very active kid and I never really played sport, I’d been to other gyms before but spent most of the time walking around with no idea what I was doing.

All of that changed when I joined Smash. The coaching and support from Greg and the team has helped me to chase down goal after goal. They have taught me good technique and helped me to increase strength, performance and ability through tailored coaching and great programming.

A couple of years, plenty of new mates and around 4 million burpees later, I am by far the strongest, fittest and most confident I have ever been.

In 2017 I walked into Crossfit Smash, new to Canberra and looking to improve my fitness. Three years later, I’m the strongest and healthiest I’ve ever been but as an added bonus I have a great group of friends who have been a big part of settling me into Canberra life.

The coaches at Smash somehow manage to make group fitness feel like it is tailored just to me. Whether it’s improving technique, setting goals or just wanting to work on strength and conditioning, Greg, Bernie and the team make sure that I get what I need out of every workout. And then, just when I think I can’t do one more burpee, the other Smashletes are always there providing encouragement.

It is a running joke in my workplace that I always leave the office at the same time every day to make it to the gym, and it’s true! Working out at Smash provides me with the balance I need to manage the stresses of work and every day life, and feel great at the end of every day. The hardest part was showing up for the first time all those years ago, and I haven’t looked back since.

Over two years later, I love making the morning sessions, my strength and ability have improved incredibly and most importantly, the beautiful community and their continued support have allowed me to let go of many hang ups I had about my body and how I look. I am strong and proud to be focused on the weight on the barbell going up, not the weight on the scales going down. I am happy, fit and in a community I love.

In 2016, after injuring my knee playing basketball, I had to have a full knee reconstruction. I thought I would never get back to the same level of fitness.

Seven months later I re-joined CrossFit Smash.

The coaches worked with my physio plan to ensure my knee could recover and regain its strength. They took me right back to basics, integrating movements as my knee and leg became stronger, but making sure I never pushed the limits during my recovery.

The coaches provided various options so that I could participate in the workouts, and members provided encouragement every step of the way.

Almost two years on, I am fitter and stronger than before. The dedication, attention and care shown by the coaches to all members is demonstrated daily.

I was at a crossroads, continue to run marathons with the accompanying back injuries, or find something new. I needed to have a day without pain. I saw multiple doctors who gave me information about what was wrong, the end result: I needed to strengthen my core.

While recovering I did a bit of research and came across a different type of gym. In a word, CrossFit Smash. The idea scared me but not as much as living with pain and doing nothing about it.

I still remember my first introduction class. I felt nervous but excited. Having coaches show me proper technique and encouragement helped me get to a point where standing or sitting wasn't painful. The coaches are so great at seeing what works for each individual.

So what started as recovery turned into a new way of life. CrossFit Smash is so much more than kettlebells or deadlifts. It's where you're not alone in your achievements, you're not alone with your doubts not even being in last place is lonely.
